Critique Concepts to Consider

by Carol B. Mitchell

  • What was your concept?
  • What drew you to this scene?
  • Did you stay faithful to you original concept?
  • How did you choose your center of interest and how did you work it into the painting?
  • Did you handle the transitions in the painting successful such as dark to light with drama or in a subtle way?
  • Do you feel you were successful?
  • What are you personally working on in your painting?
  • How successful is the color palette, composition, brushwork, amount of paint, accuracy of drawing, value scale?
  • *(Examples: a concept can be where shapes come together to form an exciting composition, or a color scheme all warms, all cool colors, all secondary colors or complementary colors, or interesting patterns of light and dark…)
  • (*Based on Mitchell Albala’s “Landscape Painting, Essential Concepts for Plein Air Techniques and Studio Practice”
